Plymouth will not need an introduction to long-time gin drinkers, but those of you who are less familiar with the category might need a primer on this legendary name. First, a little background. Plymouth is not only a brand name, but also a specific style of gin. Plymouth Distillery is the only house that make this style of gin and it is located in the town of... you guessed it: Plymouth, England. Plymouth is slightly less dry than London Dry gin and contains more root ingredients in the botanical base, resulting in an earthier flavor than London Dry gin. It is softer on the nose and palate than a traditional London Dry gin and is less juniper-driven. It has a nice dose of citrus along with subtle floral notes. It coats your mouth very elegantly and has a slightly oily touch. Sure, it mixes well with everything, but this beauty deserves a martini. 3 oz. stirred with a splash of Dolin Dry Vermouth and a lemon peel twist.
Wine Enthusiast: 93 Points
A soft, classic gin, ideal for Negronis and a wide range of other drinks. Overall, the flavor is neutral, but it has a touch of sweetness and complex underpinnings of pine, citrus and black pepper. Because it's so versatile, this workhorse is recommended for anyone starting to build a bar.
