In the second of a near unprecedented consecutive pair of generous, excellent vintages, the Bourgogne Hautes Côtes de Nuits 2023 has a saturated cherry-red color that flashes to sunlit ruby just at the edge, and the nose is like opening a sandalwood box filled with dried rosebuds in a gift shop in Chinatown. Aromas of sun-warmed griotte cherries, orange rind, and pomegranate join the sandalwood and dried flowers, sometimes alternating with suggestions of cardamom, chanterelle mushrooms, freshly grated nutmeg, and just a hint of soft earthiness as the inviting nose evolves in the glass. On the palate, the wine is pure crushed velvet, savory and wild, with an unexpectedly generous core of red berries, lavender, and dark cocoa that gradually unfurls like a peacock’s tail. And if you give the wine a little time in the glass, the fresh hay and sous bois that perfume the warm summer breezes in the Hautes-Côtes de Nuits take over. Drink now–2030
