The Chavy family have had roots in Puligny for 200 years but traditionally sold their wine to negociants. In 1976 they started bottling under their own label.
The Domaine Chavy Label was created for BNP in 2008 honoring a 40+ year relationship.
Alain Chavy produces restrained, structured, and long-lived white Burgundies from 17 acres of vineyards in Puligny-Montrachet, with small holdings in the neighboring villages of Chassagne, Meursault, and Saint Aubin. Domaine Chavy was established in 2003 with vineyards inherited from his father and includes some of Puligny’s top Premier and Grand Crus.
In today’s market, Alain sells his wines under three labels – Domaine Alain Chavy, Domaine Chavy-Martin, and Domaine Chavy.
The wines are the same.
A quick check of the prices is eye-opening.
Chavy’s Bourgogne Blanc comes from young vines grown in Puligny where the wines typically show green and yellow fruit, firm acidity and distinctive minerality.
Sustainably Farmed
Almost no chemicals are used in the vineyards apart for protection against mildew. All grapes are hand harvested, pressed and fermented in barrel at not more than 25 degrees. Alain’s winemaking philosophy is a hands off approach and a low percentage of new oak allows the terroir to shine through in these pure, elegant wines.
100% Chardonnay
As ever, this is one of the best value Bourgogne Blancs around. It is generous and ripe, with notes of citronella and stone, and not trace of heaviness as it glides to a satisfying finish.
