Chelsea Goldschmidt Vineyard Description
Dark garnet; cherry, strawberry, and white pepper aromas. Entry is broad and expansive with black cherry, wild blackberry, rhubarb, and ripe plum. Velvety smooth and rich on the mid-palate. Finishes with spicy notes of clove and cinnamon.
Guidestone Rise is a beautiful vineyard along Route 128, just east of Geyserville. The exceptional combination of climate, soil, and exposure stamps its mark on this classic varietal. This estate vineyard is well-suited to growing deeply concentrated, powerful Merlot. River soils of sandy loam and good drainage promote full grape maturity yet discourage the overly-vigorous Merlot from producing too high of yields. Named after Nick's eldest daughter, Chelsea, our Merlot highlights the juicy red fruit and spice notes from the varietal notes and barrel aging.
2022 was a challenging growing year because of little winter rain and several heat spikes throughout the summer. This extended heat in late August through Labor Day caused an earlier than usual harvest. The overall quality of fruit in 2022 was quite good, and we should enjoy excellent wines.
